Shoulder Dysplasia

Shoulder dysplasia is more common in dogs with a very heavy barrel-shaped chest, especially Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Boxers. They are generally active and happy, but put a lot of weight on their shoulders, which are often a little rotated because of their breed. This puts abnormal stress on the shoulder joint and over time causes limping and arthritis.

For this reason I would recommend all of these breeds take a long term glucosamine or joint supplement to help prevent and repair damage, as well as an Omega 3 supplement to naturally reduce inflammation. Find our range of supplements here. If you notice a limping or discomfort it may also be necessary to give anti-inflammatory medication, but it is unusual to need surgery.

Joint problems is generally best managed from all angles, and prevention is better than cure.

1. Medication to reduce the inflammation and prevent further damage, if necessary

2. Supplements to help repair any damage well as improving joint fluid production, lubrication and mobility.

3. A healthy diet to maintain body weight

4. Lifestyle modifications to help manage joint issues.
